The summer holidays were drawing to a close but the summer itself was still in full swing. A heatwave had hit Godric's Hollow and the sweltering days fading to muggy nights were causing a restless atmosphere among the residents. One residence in particular was having yet another very noisy day, and as neighbours averted their eyes and grumbled among themselves at the disturbance that that house was yet again causing. It was bad enough that the family that lived there had three boisterous children but the parents themselves were a little strange. The father seemed to work very odd hours, running in and out of the house at all times of night. Not only that, but despite the fact that they did not recognise him at all he seemed to be quite famous. Strange people would turn up at his house and just stare at it from the outside, taking pictures and seeming very excited. The mother seemed to be the most normal of the lot, she was home a lot of the time and had seemed to home-school the children until recently, when the boys had started to go away to school all year, another strange thing if you asked them.
Not the mention the house itself was very strange. People who had been in the neighbourhood a long time had mentioned how a house had once stood there, and was destroyed in a strange fire, the family inside perishing. The lot had stood empty for nineteen years until the couple had turned up, and started building a house, and had remained ever since, raising their family and just generally being odd.
It's not that they were the only odd family in the small village, it seemed to attract strange people, but at least it was peaceful, most of the time.

“James Sirius Potter. Give your sister back her book or I swear to Merlin you will not be going back to Hogwarts this year.” A voice bellowed from the doorway. James turned to see his mother standing, hands on hips, glaring at him.

“You know Mum,” He started, a cheeky grin on his face, “If you stop me from going back to Hogwarts, it means I'm going to be around here all year, under your feet, annoying you.”

“Very true. Now come on, you cheeky git.” Mrs Potter cuffed her son behind the ear as he walked into the house and turned to her daughter, who was flicking through the book that her brother had finally dropped.

“Are you alright, Lily?”

“Fine, Mum.” She replied, absent-mindedly twirling a long, pointed stick between her fingers. Every so often sparks would shoot out the end.

“Are you excited about starting Hogwarts this year?” She tried again, “It was all you've been talking about for years.”

“Yeah, sure, Mum.” Lily said quickly, almost tersely, and slammed her book shut, the cover read 'Charming for Beginners', and walked into the house.

Her mother stared after her, shaking her head, then walked briskly inside, checking her watch. Harry should really be home by now, she wondered what was keeping him. It was their special going away dinner, tomorrow the last of her children would be off to Hogwarts, and the house would be empty until Christmas. Part of her was excited, but most of her was sad. As irritating and confusing as her children were, the house would feel so empty with the last of them gone and with Harry working all the time on some big problem that he was involved with at the Auror office, she knew she would feel a bit lonely.

Just as she was wondering if she should try and increase her hours at the Daily Prophet to keep her busy, there was a crack outside and the front door burst open. Finally, he was home.

Moving towards the front door to greet him, she noticed he was moving a little slower than usual, holding his side.

“Harry?” She called, running over to him, “Are you alright, Harry?”

“Fine, Ginny.” He groaned, wincing as she grabbed his shoulder. “Just had a bit of an accident at work, I'll be fine when this starts working.” He reached in his pocket and held up a pain-relieving potion.

Ginny smiled and kissed him on the cheek. “Come on then, we have so much to do.”

“Come on Dad, or we'll miss the train!” Albus called, running through Kings Cross station. His parents were jogging behind him, pushing two luggage carts as Lily rounded up the back, James was already far ahead with his cart.

They raced through the pillar into platform 9 ¾ and it was looking slightly empty, most kids were on the train already. Harry ran up and started loading trunks onto the train, ignoring the looks from the annoyed conductors as Ginny rounded up the children.

“Be safe. Be good.” She said, fixing one of Lily's plaits, “Work hard. Especially you James.” James gave her a look. Kissing the boys goodbye, they jumped onto the train, rubbing her lipstick marks off their faces and running down the train to find their friends.

“Don't worry Lily, it will be fine.” Ginny hugged her daughter. She seemed so tiny, not old enough to go to Hogwarts. It took all her strength to stop herself from grabbing Lily and running out of there.

Lily sniffed, looking quite sad. “'Bye Mum.” She said, struggling to say something, “I...I'll miss you.” She garbled, and ran towards the train. Ginny smiled after her daughter and waved.

Just as she climbed on the train, her father grabbed her hand. “Don't think you can get away without saying goodbye to me.”

Lily grinned, “I wouldn't dream of it.”

“Write to me as soon as you get sorted, and good luck!” He said softly, and kissed her on the top of the head. “See you at Christmas, Lily.”

“Bye Dad,” She smiled after her father who looked as if he was about to burst with pride. His third child off to Hogwarts. Perfect.
