This is a story of boy meets girl.
The girl, Nymphadora Tonks, who prefers to be known by her surname only, grew up believing she would never be truly happy until she found ‘the one.’ This belief stemmed from early exposure to sad British pop music, as well as constant teasing from an early age about her metamorphmagus abilities. The boy, Remus Lupin, did not share this belief. Since the disintegration of his parents’ marriage due to his lycanthrope, he had vowed never to put anyone through that sort of danger and torment again, even if it meant never finding someone to love.
You should know up front, that while this is a story of boy meets girl, it is not your typical love story.

There was a loud knock on his front door.
Remus Lupin sighed, and took a moment to pull himself together. Run a hand through his graying hair, straighten his tie, brush off his sweater.
The knocking hadn’t stopped. If anything, it had become more insistent.
He shut his eyes tightly. He can do this. Face people. Nothing to it. After all, he hadn’t done anything wrong. Had he?
Bill Weasley was standing in the doorway, and he did not look impressed.
“What the bloody hell did you say this time?” He sounded both angry and resigned at the same time as he pushed past him to stand in the middle of the sitting room, arms folded tightly across his chest. With his dragon hide boots, leather jacket and that dangling fang earring, he did look rather formidable.
Frowning, Remus closed the door.
“Hi. Sorry, what’s this about?”
Bill rolled his eyes. “Don’t play stupid, Lupin. You know this is about Tonks.”
His heart skipped a beat, as it always did when someone mentioned her name.
“So what did you do?”
Remus shrugged. “I broke it off.”
“WHAT?” Bill looked confused. “Why?”
“I don’t have to explain myself to you.” He replied defensively. “What’s it to you anyway?”
Bill raised an eyebrow. “She’s my best friend, you know. But fine. She won’t have a problem telling me what happened. I just figured her opinion of the way things went might vary slightly from yours, and I like to stay as neutral as possible in incidents between friends.”
Friends.
Remus sighed. “It just… it just wasn’t working. She could do so much better than me. I just-”
“Because you’re a werewolf?”
He shoved his hands in his pockets, scowling. He hated how easily people could read him. “partly.” He admitted. “But… we just argue, all the time. And I feel like I’m putting her at risk by being with her. She doesn’t need that on top of everything else going on.”
He felt Bill might think he was being a bit melodramatic if he added that he didn’t deserve any of her time. Or her affections. So he kept those thoughts to himself.
Bill shook his head. Disappointed. “I’m not going to try and convince you otherwise, I know it’s useless. I also know for a fact you’ll have it coming from Mum as well as Tonks when she finds out. But… If you’re not going to be with her, just stay out of it. And DON’T try playing the friends card, okay? She’s taking it bad enough as is.”
Remus nodded, opening the door. “Right. Thanks.”
Now he was really regretting telling her they could still be friends.

The early morning sun reflected in her tousled pink hair as she yawned, resting her head on his chest. Absentmindedly, he started rubbing small circles across her bare shoulder.
“I want to stay here forever. Just us… just this.” She smiled up at him, her dark eyes sparkling.
“Me too.” He replied softly, ignoring the squirming feeling inside his stomach.
He’d always been good at lying through his teeth.

It was a hot afternoon in July when Remus first met Tonks. The Order meeting wasn’t till later that night, but Kingsley had pulled her out of work early to get her acquainted with other members- and mostly to introduce her to Sirius, the cousin she’d spent the last 14 years of her life being told was a raving murderous lunatic.
Remus was in the library, pouring over old, dusty volumes of various history books. He felt most comfortable here, not forcing his presence on anyone- it didn’t matter who said that his lycanthrope wasn’t an issue. The unavoidable truth was that it was, and always would be, something people felt uncomfortable about. But no matter; he had grown accustomed to loneliness and silence over the years. He hadn’t had much to do after all his friends had been either murdered or imprisioned.
A loud clatter disrupted his thoughts. Sighing, he waited for it- yes there it was, Mrs. Black’s portrait had gone off again. He closed the book he was reading with a snap, coughing as dust flew into his face.
The screeching stopped quickly, and he heard Sirius’ bark-like laugh as he reached the landing. Curious, he peered over the banister.
Sirius was talking to a young girl with an animated, excited face, dark eyes, and – and a shock of short, bright pink hair.
He frowned, wondering if this was a customary shade for girls to dye their hair these days, watching her hug Sirius. She obviously knew him somehow, but how they knew each other was beyond him. He hadn’t expected Sirius to keep in touch with anyone while he was in jail.
Kingsley tapped her on the shoulder and she let Sirius go, looking back as Kingsley pointed her in the direction of the kitchen. She nodded, saying something else to Sirius before walking past him. Glancing around, she caught sight of him, standing above her and trying not to look like he’d been watching.
She smiled at him then- a puzzled, curious, excited, warm smile that remained floating in front of his eyes, even after she had gone through the door. He blinked furiously, trying to get rid of her image- one that he felt shouldn’t be staying with him for so long.
“Alright Moony?” Sirius appeared at the top of the stairs next to him, leaning casually on the banister. “You look a bit confused there.”
“Fine.” He replied absently. “Who’s that with the pink hair?”
“Nymphadora. You remember, Andromeda’s kid? She was what, seven or eight last time I saw her? Apparently she likes being called Tonks now.” He smirked. “Grown up well, hasn’t she?”
Remus could recall a faint memory of a small girl with bright green bobbing pig tails, but it seemed impossible that she had grown up into that.
“What do you mean, grown up well?”
Sirius raised an eyebrow, he smirk growing wider. “I saw you looking. And quite honestly, I cannot blame you. Even with that pink hair going on… she is fit.”
“She- she’s your cousin!” Remus stammered, stunned. “And I was not looking like that. I was just looking to see what was going on.”
“Of course.” Sirius said mildly, walking back down the stairs, leaving Remus entirely sure that avoiding Sirius- and probably Tonks too, so Sirius didn’t get the wrong idea - would be the best idea for the night.
He introduced himself and shook her hand. Then he sat at the other end of the table in mock boredom, pretending the book he was reading was much more interesting than what she was saying. He wasn’t really reading though. Just the sound of her voice and her laugh was intoxicating enough.
He ended up spending the night watching her from across the room and wondering why on earth he found her so captivating, before looking down whenever she or Sirius so much as breathed in his direction.

“She’s an auror, you know.”
“Really?” Remus refused to look up from the report he was writing for Dumbledore.
“Yep. Trained under Mad-eye himself. Frankly, I’m surprised he’d want to train someone who falls over their own feet literally every time they enter a room.”
True enough, Tonks had managed to walk into that stupid troll leg umbrella stand every time she’d been at Grimauld Place.
“She’s only knocked it over twice, Sirius. You could just move it, you’re always saying how foul it is anyway.” He was speaking calmly, knowing full well Sirius was winding him up.
“I’ve decided it has character.” Sirius replied, standing with a flourish. “Unlike you, currently. So I’m leaving.”
Remus shrugged. Good. “Bye bye.”
Sirius left, but not before popping his head back round his bedroom door and adding, “You know, being an auror, she knows how to deal with werewolves.” He winked.
Remus rolled his eyes, even though his back was to Sirius. “I don’t think that’s a good thing in this sort of situation, Sirius.”
“And what sort of situation might that be?”
“Not the kind you’re thinking of! No situations like that! Just… a friends situation.”
He heard Sirius snicker at the word friend, and could not believe he was honestly that easy to read. He wasn’t, was he?
Surely Sirius was just being a prat, as per usual.
“You’ve said all of four words to her. One speaks more often to Friends, Moony.”
“I’m getting there.”
“Sure you are. Unfortunately, she also has a boyfriend.”
Remus didn’t look up.
“That’s hardly unfortunate, Sirius.”
He could feel Sirius rolling his eyes as he left. He could be as sarcastic as he wanted, but Remus could not get involved like this. Not with her. She was too young, he kept telling himself. She probably didn’t even want to be friends with something like him.
(5)
He still hadn’t had a proper conversation with her.
Whenever he walked into a room she was in, she’d say hi, and he’d say hi back. That was it. Or at least, that had been it, until today.
He wasn’t doing anything special. Sitting in the Kitchen, drinking tea and re-reading Wuthering Heights. Then she came in to make a coffee.
“Hi Remus.”
“Tonks.”
He kept reading, and she walked behind him. A full minute later and he realised she was still there. Confused, he turned.
She pointed to his book.
“Wuthering Heights.” She smiled. “I love Wuthering Heights.”
“You like Wuthering Heights?” how many girls her age (especially girls her age who were witches and had bright pink hair) had even read Wuthering Heights?
She nodded. “Best Classic. ‘And I pray one prayer- I repeat it till my tongue stiffens- Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest as long as I am living, you say I killed you- haunt me then!’ It’s Brilliant.”
Flashing another dazzling smile, she left the kitchen.
“Shit.”
This could not be happening. He couldn’t do this. Could he?
He could not fancy her. She was young and beautiful and she had a boyfriend. He was... well, a much older werewolf.
She was only a young auror with a taste for classic muggle English novels. It wasn’t like that was a one in a million find or anything.
Maybe if he kept telling himself he couldn’t, and that she was off-limits, he would actually start to believe it.
